CURRICULUM VITAE

Theodore_Eliades Marc Schätzle studied dentistry at the University Bern and received his postgraduate Orthodontic at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. During his graduate program he was collaborating with the Department of Periodontology and Fixed Prosthodontics, University of Bern (Prof. H. Löe & Prof. N. P. Lang) and was performing epidemiological analyses on the natural history of periodontal disease. Based on those results he received 2005 an Odontolgiae doctorat-Diploma (PhD-equivalent) from the Malmö University, Sweden. After he focused on a second research field of interest: skeletal anchorage. Since 2007 Dr. Schätzle works in his private clinic and as a senior lecturer, he is responsible for clinical teaching and research projects of the postgraduate students of the Clinic of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry. In 2009 he spent 6 months at the University of Hong Kong (Prof. U. Hägg, Prof. A.B.R. Rabie) as a Visiting Associate Professor. In 2010 he successfully passed the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh examination in Orthodontics and received the Private Docent (PD) in the field of Orthodontics from the Medical Faculty of the University of Zurich in 2011. In 2012 he was appointed as Honorary Associate Professor at the Department of Orthodontics, at The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR China. The Titularprofessorship was awarded to Marc Schätzle in 2018 by the University of Zurich, Switzerland.

ABSTRACT

Epidemiology of the periodontal disease

Through parallel longitudinal studies of periodontal disease in man conducted in Norway between 1969 and 1995, and Sri Lanka between 1970 and 1990 it was possible to to study the initiation and progression of periodontal disease in two very different population groups. The two groups show geographical, racial, cultural, socioeconomic and educational differences, and they represented extremes as to perceived severity of periodontal disease, general health care delivery systems and to dental care. The Sri Lanka population had never been exposed to any program of oral professional or self care. The Norwegian population, on the other hand, was exposed to conventional care throughout life starting at age 3 years. Focusing on the Norwegian cohort the collected data from this 26-year longitudinal investigation on the initiation and progression of periodontal disease in a randomized group of middle-class men Norwegian men aged between 16 and 59 years will be outlined. Gingival sites that bled on probing (GI=2), yielded an odds ratio of 3.22 to lose attachment as compared to healthy sites over the 26 year observation period. Odds ratio analyses showed that of six major risk indicators selected, gingival inflammation represents the highest risk for loss of attachment. Teeth surrounded by inflammation-free gingiva were maintained for a tooth age of 51 years, while teeth consistently surrounded by inflamed gingiva had a 46 times higher risk of being lost.
